Low Level Laser Therapy
Innate Chiropractic uses the latest advanced technology. Helping our patients heal faster for a full recovery.
Low Level Laser Therapy is used to:
- Increase the speed, quality and strength of tissue repair
- Provide acute and chronic pain relief
- Resolve inflammation
- Reduce swelling
What is Low Level Laser Therapy?
Also called cold laser, low level laser therapy is a laser and LED light therapy, where the application of red light, near infrared light and super pulsed laser over injuries, assists with soft tissue healing, reduction of inflammation and pain relief.
The laser treatment will improve tissue repair (skin wounds, muscle, tendon, bone,
nerves), reduce inflammation and swelling and give relief for both acute and chronic pain
wherever the beam is applied.
Innate Chiropractic has introduced laser therapy because it is a highly effective treatment for chronic pain syndrome, soft tissue injuries and persistent/recurring conditions.
Low level laser therapy often referred to as LLLT, is a well studied method and has been used for many years as a non-invasive application tool for osteoarthritic joints, sports injuries, back and neck pain and neuropathic pain syndrome.
What Conditions do Chiropractors use Low Level Laser Therapy for?
Our team uses LLLT therapy to manage many conditions such as:
- Chronic pain syndromes e.g. chronic neck and lower back pain
- Muscular spasms
- Soft tissue injuries e.g. sprains/strains
- Osteoarthritis
- Nerve pain (Neuropathic pain) e.g. from disc injuries/trigeminal neuralgia
- Sports injuries
- Tendonitis
- Bursitis
- Ankle sprains
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tennis elbow/Golfer’s elbow
- Knee joint injuries e.g. – ligament sprains
How does cold laser therapy work?
Low level laser therapy works by delivering light energy to injured tissue, causing the tissue to heal at a quicker rate. The light energy delivered to the tissue works at a cellular level. The lasers are handheld devices around the size of a flashlight. During your treatment session, the laser is placed directly over the injured area for anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes. It depends on the size of the area undergoing treatment and the goal of treatment on the day.
The Multi Radiance laser we use in clinic is a Class I laser device, and has Australian approval and clearance by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). It combines 3 clinically proven light wavelengths for optimal tissue penetration through your skin layers, consisting of red light – 660nm, infrared light – 875nm and super pulsed laser – 905nm. The laser emits non-thermal photons of light at a hundred billionths of a second pulses, without any harmful thermal effects at high density.
More specifically, LLLT stimulates a micro-structure within your cells called the Mitochondria, to produce higher amounts of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) to enhance healing and restore normal cell function. ATP is an energy molecule found in all forms of life, and when a cell is sick or injured the mitochondria’s ability to produce ATP is reduced. By using certain wavelengths of light, this can stimulate cells to produce more ATP and your tissue will heal faster. It is similar to when sunlight hits your skin and triggers the process to make vitamin D or when sunlight hits the leaves of plants and triggers photosynthesis.
Is Laser Therapy Safe?
Unlike Class IV high powered lasers, Class I lasers do not produce heat or thermal effects and cannot damage your tissue. By way of the its name – Low level laser therapy – operates at a much lower power and is not harmful to people. In fact, it is safe for all ages to use as an effective treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
LLLT works best with repeated sessions due to its cumulative effects. It will depend upon your condition being treated and the severity of injury, on the total number of sessions needed. The more severe the injury, the greater number of treatments required. Each patient will have an individual response and some may respond quicker than others, whilst some will take longer than anticipated. Innate Chiropractic can advise you on the standard number of treatments needed for certain injuries, but it will always depend on your body’s own response to the treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Discovered in 1967, and having been used for over 50 years around the world, no significant, serious adverse or long term side effects have been documented. Remember, LLLT uses light waves and not heat waves. Meaning, low level laser therapy (Class I) is a safe and non-invasive therapy. Innate Chiropractic keeps up to date with all the technology developments in Low Level Laser Therapy. You can be assured we utilise only the best equipment.
